Ornament

Coined by Anne Anlin Cheng lays the foundations for this project. The word, a twist of Said’s theory of Orientalism, examines how Asian femininity has been framed through aesthetics. Throughout history, Asian women have often been objectified as decoration and seen as the Other; this work responds to the ongoing stereotypes and looks at cultural identity from a personal perspective. Throughout this series, I explored these inherited notions and how they intersect with my own lived experience and the identity of other people close to me in my life.
