Imsouane After “Disaster”
May 20, 2026
In 2024, a part of Imsouane was steam-rolled for a rumoured large, luxury resort that is apparently “backed by the Moroccan government”. Demolition was carried out on all small and old houses because inhabitants did not have an official license for the land the house was built on, deeming the homes illegal. However, some of these buildings have been there for generations and have seen many people move in and out from them.
A year later, I went. I want these photos to highlight Imsouane; the rolling waves, abandoned glass bottles, and layered surf camp buildings. I also want to remember the forgotten shelters that lay destroyed, the wandering dogs and the echos of the homes, lives and land destroyed and taken by the Moroccan government. How even a small fishing village isn’t safe from gentrification.
