I Will Only Follow Grandmother
June 18, 2026
My grandmother’s house is located in the historic district of Sidi Youssef Ben Ali, named after one of the Seven Saints of Marrakesh.
The architecture of this house is what is described as a riad. Also meaning the word “garden”, a riad is a traditional home built around an open-air central courtyard or garden. The heart of my grandmothers home is an interior courtyard met with surrounding two stories and an adjustable roof.
However, in this series I wanted to show the Zellige tiles. The centuries old artisan process of handmade glazed terracotta tiles that decorate the entire home. These tiles become remnants of a large family home. Scattered sunlight seems to be the only thing that touches them.
