I feel like it’s easy to get caught up in hate when you’re unhappy, but that doesn’t excuse hating innocent people. Being British is a poem I wrote in reflection of my own frustrations with England right now. I paired this with images from my archive that I took during the 2024 UK general election, which coexisted with the 2024 Euro championships. These images have now become recontextualised through the current political climate, it’s made clear that hate has been bred ferociously over the past two years. Patriotism has now become something of weaponry for far more sinister reasoning.
