A Quarry Dartmoor Reclaimed

May 20, 2026

Known previously as Royal Oak Quarry, Foggintor Quarry was one of the Granite Quarries of Dartmoor. For more than a hundred years, Foggintor Quarry aided in supplying stone, both locally and across the country, for whatever stone was needed for. This included London Bridge and Nelson’s Column.

Foggintor Quarry began being used in the 18th century. The quarry’s productivity exploded, and by the mid 19th century the numbers of workers increased. However, by 1906 Foggintor Quarry was left to be reclaimed by Dartmoor.

A lake is now in the place of the mining pit, while the surrounding green takes over the ruins of the industrial history of Dartmoor that once was.
