Introducing Zak Lyon: Fashion, identity and Spin + Drain

September 12, 2026

Bristol photographer Zak Lyon joins Underline with Spin + Drain

We’re pleased to welcome Bristol-based fashion and editorial photographer Zak Lyon as the latest contributor to Underline Media Collective.

Zak’s work uses fashion, gesture and colour to play with identity, imagination and the way we see ourselves. His first project for Underline, Spin + Drain, is a collaboration with drag artist Gina Tonic/Arlo, tracing Arlo’s journey towards drag and the acceptance of his trans identity.

Drawing on childhood memories and an outfit once hidden away in a closet, the series looks back at creativity as an escape from growing up without a clear sense of belonging, and at what it means to reclaim that creativity later in life.

For Arlo, the project is about “taking the contradictions of my childhood” and turning them into something creative. Returning to an outfit he had hidden away as a child becomes part of that process: moving from being “a scared and confused child” to “a confident, proud drag queen”.

The result is a bold, playful set of photographs that moves between childhood memory and the person Arlo is today. It’s also a brilliant introduction to Zak’s work, and we’re very happy to have him joining Underline.

Zak Lyon’s Spin + Drain will be published on Underline on 2nd October.
